Kilimanjaro Expedition

Machame Route – 7 Days

Tanzania | Mount Kilimanjaro (5,895m)

Trip Description

The Machame Route is widely regarded as the most scenic and rewarding path to the summit of Mount Kilimanjaro. Known as the “Whiskey Route,” Machame offers dramatic landscapes, varied terrain, and an excellent acclimatization profile that significantly improves summit success rates.

This seven-day expedition is designed for adventurous travelers seeking a physically demanding yet highly achievable ascent of Africa’s highest peak. Beginning at the historic Marangu Hotel, the journey traverses dense rainforest, high alpine desert, glaciated summit slopes, and sweeping volcanic ridgelines before reaching Uhuru Peak at 5,895 metres.

The itinerary balances challenge with acclimatization, allowing climbers time to adapt to altitude while experiencing the extraordinary ecological diversity of Kilimanjaro. Supported by experienced mountain guides, porters, and camp staff, guests can focus fully on the experience: moving deliberately through austere environments, building resilience, and sharing a transformative journey with their team.

This expedition is suitable for fit individuals with prior hiking or endurance experience. While no technical climbing skills are required, summit day is physically and mentally demanding and requires determination, pacing, and preparation.

7-Day Machame Route Itinerary

Day 1 – Arrival in Tanzania & Expedition Briefing

Marangu Hotel | 1,400m

Arrival and transfer to Marangu Hotel, located on the lush lower slopes of Kilimanjaro. After check-in, guests meet the expedition team for a comprehensive climb briefing, gear inspection, and final equipment preparation.

The remainder of the day is reserved for rest, hydration, and acclimatization before the expedition begins.

Accommodation: Marangu Hotel
Meals Included: Dinner

Day 2 – Machame Gate to Machame Camp

1,800m → 3,000m

Hiking Time: 5–7 Hours

After breakfast, transfer to Machame Gate for registration and the official start of the climb. The trail ascends steadily through dense rainforest rich with giant ferns, moss-covered trees, and occasional sightings of colobus monkeys.

The humid forest environment gradually gives way to lower heathland as the team arrives at Machame Camp.

Accommodation: Mountain tents at Machame Camp

Day 3 – Machame Camp to Shira Camp

3,000m → 3,840m

Hiking Time: 4–6 Hours

The route climbs above the rainforest into moorland terrain with expansive views across the Shira Plateau. Vegetation becomes sparse as the landscape transitions into volcanic alpine wilderness.

By afternoon, the team reaches Shira Camp with panoramic views of Kibo Peak and Mount Meru in the distance.

Accommodation: Mountain tents at Shira Camp

Day 4 – Shira Camp to Barranco Camp via Lava Tower

3,840m → 4,630m → 3,950m

Hiking Time: 6–8 Hours

Today is a critical acclimatization day following the “climb high, sleep low” principle. The trail ascends into alpine desert toward Lava Tower before descending into the dramatic Barranco Valley.

This day is often the first true test of altitude adaptation and pacing. The giant senecio plants and steep valley walls create one of the most iconic landscapes on the mountain.

Accommodation: Mountain tents at Barranco Camp
Meals Included: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Day 5 – Barranco Camp to Barafu Camp

3,950m → 4,673m

Hiking Time: 7–9 Hours

The morning begins with the ascent of the famous Barranco Wall — a steep but non-technical scramble offering spectacular views over southern Kilimanjaro.

The route continues through exposed alpine terrain to Barafu Camp, the final camp before the summit attempt. After an early dinner and equipment preparation, climbers rest before a midnight wake-up for summit day.

Accommodation: Mountain tents at Barafu Camp

Day 6 – Summit Day: Barafu Camp to Uhuru Peak to Millennium Camp

4,673m → 5,895m → 3,820m

Hiking Time: 10–15 Hours

Shortly after midnight, the team begins the summit ascent under headlamp light. The climb is slow, deliberate, and physically demanding as the route ascends steep scree slopes toward Stella Point before continuing along the crater rim to Uhuru Peak — the highest point in Africa.

Summit arrival typically coincides with sunrise, revealing sweeping views across the glaciers and plains far below.

After time at the summit for photos and celebration, the team descends to Barafu Camp for a short rest before continuing to Millennium Camp for the night.

Accommodation: Mountain tents at Millennium Camp

Day 7 – Millennium Camp to Mweka Gate & Return to Marangu Hotel

3,820m → 1,640m

Hiking Time: 4–6 Hours

The final descent follows forested trails to Mweka Gate where climbers receive summit certificates and celebrate the completion of the expedition.

After farewells to the mountain crew, transfer back to Marangu Hotel for hot showers, recovery, and a celebratory afternoon at the hotel.
